Pillow Cases in the UK and US

Looking for Satin Bed Linen. What is Satin?
One of the problems people find when they start looking for Satin Bed Linen is there is a common misconception about the term. Satin is the term for a fabric weave, not a specific fabric.
Satin is a Weave
The satin weave is characterized by four or more weft yarns floating over a warp yarn or vice versa. This explains the even sheen, as unlike in other weaves, the light reflecting is not scattered as much by the fibres, which have fewer tucks. If a fabric is formed with a satin weave using filament fibres such as silk, polyester or nylon it is termed a Satin.
If the yarns used are short-staple yarns such as cotton, the fabric formed is considered a Sateen.
High Quality Satin Silk and Polyester Satin
High quality Satin is produced in Pure Silk and also can be found in Polyester. Both of these are woven fabrics. There are knitted Polyester and Nylon Satins which are very poor quality and should be avoided at all costs. The highest quality Satin Silk is woven from the finest Mulberry Silk. The best quality of Polyester Satin requires an extremely high quality of Polyester Thread combined with a Silk Satin weave. Much then depends on dyeing and subsequent processes to achieve a Silk like fabric.
Both Silk Satin and Polyester Satin of the very highest quality with a soft, sensual and tactile feel are available in the unique ranges of Luxury Bed Linen from Between the Sheets.

Bamboo or Cotton Bed Linen- What’s the difference to the environment?
The production of organic cotton is a vast improvement in many ways on the traditional non-organic approach which is a huge global user of both fertilisers and pesticides. However, organic cotton cultivation still requires a great deal of irrigation and has to be planted each season.
Organic Bamboo Cultivation has huge advantages over Cotton
In contrast a yield from an acre of bamboo is 10 times greater than the yield you get from cotton. In an age where land use is under enormous pressure this is hugely significant. As Bamboo is a grass it can be harvested every 3 or 4 years and then renews itself without need for replanting. It spreads rapidly across large areas. It can be planted on hill slopes where nothing else is viable and encourages soil stability. It is a fully sustainable crop. In its cultivation it will grow with normal rainfall whereas Cotton requires substantial irrigation.
Bamboo Fabric is softer and silkier to the touch than Cotton and is a real alternative to Cotton for those who consider the impact of their purchases on the environment.

Why choose Pure Mulberry Silk for Bed Linen
Silk is a natural protein based fibre containing 18 amino acids, the same building blocks of human skin. The silk protein fibres are strong and resistant to stretching and they have strong peptide bonds which will not break. Silk’s good absorbency makes it comfortable in warm weather. Its low conductivity keeps warm air close to the skin during cold weather. Silk’s elegant, soft luster and beautiful drape makes it perfect for bed linen.
Silk Bed Linen 19 Momme 400 Thread Count
Silk fibres have a triangular cross section with rounded corners. This allows light to hit at many different angles, so silk is a bright fibre and has a natural shine. It has a smooth, soft texture that is not slippery, unlike many synthetic fibres. Our silk is of the very highest quality and weight, woven with a Satin finish for that exquisite gloss finish, silky softness and beautiful drape . Ours is the finest quality 100% Pure Mulberry Silk, 19 momme & 400+ thread count.
Ideal for Skin and Hair
Pure Silk Sheets are excellent for people with sensitive skin and allergy problems. Many people use Pure Silk Pillow Cases as they are beneficial in preventing the formation of wrinkles and keeps your hairstyle looking its best. Hair and skin slide over silk unlike cotton based fabrics which catch and pull.
Judging Silk Quality
There are many types of Silk and very many qualities. Our silk is 100% Pure Mulberry Silk. The finest there is. Our Chinese suppliers are expert in producing beautiful silk fabrics in a stunning range of colours. An excellent weight for bed linen is 19 momme.Mommes (mm) is a unit of weight traditionally used to measure the density of silk. Only 400+ thread count is suitable for bed linen. Beware of very cheap Silk Bed Linen. It sould easily be a Silk/Cotton mix or you will even find Man-made fibres being sold as Silk. You can test with a lghted match. Real silk burns and smells a little like burning hair, man-made fabrics will burn and melt!

Deep Fitted Sheets for Deeper Mattresses
Bed Manufacturers are making mattresses deeper and deeper. Not so very long ago almost all bed mattresses were a standard 20cm 8″ deep. In recent years they have been getting deeper and deeper. The trend to having mattress toppers as an accessory adds to the depth. This is fine and means greater sleeping comfort. But, and it’s quite a big but – where can you find fitted sheets that are the correct size for these deeper mattresses and don’t ‘ping’ off? Most high street and online retailers only stock 8″ or 10″ deep fitted sheets.
Deep fitted sheets for any size bed
Just a very few specialist bed linen manufacturers have responded to these changes – foremost amongst them UK based Between the Sheets. They offer fitted sheets for mattresses up to 35cm 14″ deep as standard and will custom make fitted sheets for any depth of mattress.

UK couples sleep suffers due to small bed sizes
Our own Between the Sheets research comparing 1000′s of bed linen orders from the UK and Europe have found that the UK lags far behind other European countries in the size of beds we sleep in. Most of our EU neighbours stretch out in a average 160cm x 200cm bed while British sleepers in a standard double bed share a bed 4’6″ or 135cm wide. That gives the average couple only 2’3″ or 67.5cm of space each. Such a small sleeping space ( a single bed is 3′ or 90cm) can really impact on the quality of sleep of couples sharing a bed.
Couples sleep much better in a bigger bed
Recent studies prove that couples sleep much better in a bigger bed – the extra space means that a partner tossing and turning during the night is far less likely to disturb their sleeping partner. The Sleep Council also recommend that beds are 6″ – 8″ longer than the sleeper. But, things are changing, with many people in the UK now opting for King, Super King and with a little help from Ikea Euro King and Euro Super King Beds as well as American imports of Eastern King and Californian King Beds. Mattresses are getting deeper too as consumers look for greater sleeping comfort.
Where can I get Bed Linen for a Larger Bed?
However getting a Larger bed solves one problem and creates another. Where can you get high quality bed linen for larger and unusual sized beds? A trawl around leading High Street retailers can prove very frustrating as most stock only standard UK sizes and a mattress depth of 8″ .
Between the Sheets manufacture here in the UK and offer a huge range of sizes as standard and a custom service to create perfect fitting bed linen for your bed – whatever the size.
